Job Forum, Council of Europe (Strasbourg, France)

The European Audiovisual Observatory took part in the Council of Europe’s Job Forum with its own stand. The Observatory’s Executive Director, the Administrator, Expert, Analysts and Heads of the Units were present on the stand and were able to give information about the mission and practical work of the Observatory.

This was a successful event organised by the Council’s Human Resources Policy and Development Division which contributed greatly to increasing the visibility of the European Audiovisual Observatory within the Council of Europe.

Partnering Europe

The Observatory morning in Cannes, Sunday 15 May 2005, 10:00 -12:30

Conference organised during the Cannes International Film Market to present the latest results of the Observatory's work.

This conference will deal with the various ways in which non-European countries can work in partnership with the European cinema industry.

A Chinese visitor at the European Audiovisual Observatory

On the 9th February, Wolfgang Closs, Executive Director of the European Audiovisual Observatory, will celebrate the Chinese New Year by welcoming Dr. Qinq LUO, a researcher from the Communication University of China in Beijing.

Dr Qing LUO is conducting a field investigation in Germany, Belgium, France and Italy about the regulation and the development of the television market and the policy and economy of the audiovisual sector in Europe. Her report will be submitted to the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service), the CSC (China Scholarship Council) and to the State Administration for Radio, Film and Television of China (SARFT).

The Observatory is helping Dr Qing LUO in organising her interviews with European experts and professionals. In Strasbourg, she will visit the Media Division of the Council of Europe, Eurimages, the Centre universitaire européen de journalisme (CUEJ), ARTE, la CIRCOM Régionale (an association of regional television broadcasters whose Secretariat is in France 3 Alsace) and the Fonds de soutien de la Communauté urbaine de Strasbourg (Strasbourg’s regional aid for audiovisual production).

“The Chinese television market is in rapid evolution with the development of digital television. According to official statistics there are almost 3000 television channels in China”, explains André Lange Head of the department for Information on Markets and Financing at the Observatory. “This evolution raises new regulatory issues. The Observatory is very happy to contribute to the reviewing of Chinese broadcasting regulation by explaining the basic values of the audiovisual policy in Europe and helping to understand the wide range of national television landscapes and regulatory models”.

EFADs (European Film Agency Directors) Anti-Piracy meeting (London, United Kingdom)

Dr. André Lange, Head of the Department for Information on Markets and Financing, will take part in this meeting hosted by the UK Film Council. The aim is to consider the establishment of a Europe-wide platform under the aegis of the European Film Agency Directors (EFADs) to co-ordinate anti-piracy initiatives.

Set up in December 1992, the European Audiovisual Observatory's mission is to gather and distribute information on the audiovisual industry in Europe. The Observatory is a European public service body comprised of 36 member states and the European Community, represented by the European Commission. It operates within the legal framework of the Council of Europe and works alongside a number of partner and professional organisations from within the industry and with a network of correspondents. In addition to contributions to conferences, other major activities are the publication of a Yearbook, newsletters and reports, the compilation and management of databases and the provision of information through the Observatory's Internet site.
