Europe

28th meeting of the European Platform of Regulatory Authorities (EPRA)

At the invitation of the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland
On the agenda of this meeting will be the following issues:
- Implementing the scope of the AVMS Directive,
- the role of regulators in the supervision of public service broadcasting
activities,
- media and political pluralism,
- regulatory approach to digital TV - Experience and lessons learned
and the implementation of self and co-regulatory schemes.
Dr. Susanne Nikoltchev, Head of the Department for
Legal Information of the Observatory, will attend the conference and
participate in the various workshops.

Workshop: Towards digital television in Russia and in Western Europe
(Moscow, Russia)
Organised by the European Audiovisual Observatory in collaboration
with Groteck.
This seminar will examine the digital television landscape in Russia,
with the presentation of a report on this subject commissioned by the
Observatory. Broadcasting regulation and the question of authors’
rights in the Commonwealth of Independent States will also be discussed.
The Observatory will present its latest analyses of the recent evolutions
in the regulation of television and media audiovisual services in Western
Europe and of the digital television and VoD markets in Western Europe.

Exhibition on the Council of Europe's 13 partial agreements

European Audiovisual Observatory
is taking part in a PR action targeting the members of the Council
of Europe's Parliamentary Assembly. The Assembly is meeting in
Strasbourg and a poster and flyer exhibition giving information
on the Council of Europe's 13 partial agreements - of which the
Observatory is one - is being organised in order to raise their
awareness about what we do. Wolfgang Closs had the occasion to
visit this exhibition and, on the same occasion, met the Council's
Secretary General, Terry Davis, who expressed his satisfaction
at this exhibition.

Set up in December 1992, the European Audiovisual Observatory's mission is to gather and distribute information on the audiovisual industry in Europe. The Observatory is a European public service body comprised of 37 member states and the European Union, represented by the European Commission. It operates within the legal framework of the Council of Europe and works alongside a number of partner and professional organisations from within the industry and with a network of correspondents. In addition to contributions to conferences, other major activities are the publication of a Yearbook, newsletters and reports, the compilation and management of databases and the provision of information through the Observatory's Internet site.
