This fifth edition of IRIS Themes covers cases concerning freedom of expression, and media and journalistic freedom brought before the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg from 1994 to 2019. It contains summaries of over 300 judgements or decisions by the Court and provides hyperlinks to the full text of each of the short-reported judgements or decisions. The summaries included in this e-book can be retrieved from our legal database, IRIS Merlin.

This new edition of IRIS Themes provides valuable orientation in the steadily growing amount of case law concerning Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights which protects the right to freedom of expression and information. It is an unmissable research resource for journalists and academics working on freedom of expression and media/journalist freedom in Europe.

The research was carried out by the Observatory’s partner institution, Amsterdam’s Institute for Information Law (IViR) under the auspices of IViR’s Tarlach McGonagle and Dirk Voorhoof from Ghent University and Legal Human Academy.

Susanne Nikoltchev, the Observatory’s Executive Director, said of this new publication: “The ECHR has never been more central to protecting press and media freedom. The Observatory’s IRIS Themes publication has reported on its work over the past 26 years. This new edition, published to coincide with World Press Freedom Day, gives a valuable up-date on its latest case law”.

With over 35,000 downloads over the past four years, Iris Themes is an unmissable reference work on freedom of expression in Europe.
