Creators in Europe’s Screen Sectors – Sketching Present and Future Challenges

Creators in Europe’s Screen Sectors – Sketching Present and Future Challenges will bring together industry representatives from the major creative sectors in European film and television: screenwriters, directors, actors and composers for example.

The Observatory and its panelists will be exploring the conditions framing the creation of audiovisual content and looking at what initiatives will be needed in Europe to improve

• Recognition
• Working conditions
• Remuneration

for Europe's creators working in the audiovisual sector today.

The Strasbourg-based Observatory, which is part of the Council of Europe, will provide an overview of the current trends in the audiovisual sector which are of significance to its creative forces. Head of Department for Market Information, Gilles Fontaine, will explore the current boom in TV fiction production and streaming, as well as the new concept of "showrunner". What do these recent developments mean for Europe's creative sector?

Edith Sepp, Head of the Estonian Film Institute, will then drill down into these trends by interviewing selected personalities from the creative sector who will share their first hand experience in what it means and actually requires to create audiovisual content.

The Observatory's Head of Department for Legal Information, Maja Cappello will then present a European overview of the legal framework and policy issues related to recognition, working conditions and remuneration for creators working in the European Audiovisual sector.

Maja will then moderate a policy panel to look at future ways of nurturing and assisting the creative sector through very real current challenges such as the effects of COVID, the digital revolution and the accompanying copyright concerns, and the need to constantly invest in and support the development stage of new projects.

Susanne Nikoltchev, Executive Director of the Observatory, stated her satisfaction at working with the Estonian Presidency in 2022, the year of the Observatory's 30th anniversary. She looked forward to “a useful and stimulating reflection on the challenges faced by those professionals of the creative sector who are not necessarily the focus of policy discussions but who are indispensable for nurturing Europe's incredibly rich and varied creative audiovisual content industry and possibly in need of some nurturing themselves.”
