The legal offer of VoD services in Russia grew by a massive 32% between 2015 and 2016.
AVOD's share decreased and subscription became the main beneficiary: an impressive growth in the Russian market was demonstrated by the SVOD monetization model in 2016 (+293% in comparison to 2015).
All this is in spite of the fact that 2 out of 3 Russians reportedly consider that viewing and downloading pirated content is legal, according to a survey conducted by software company Irdeto. In addition, Russian legislators have recently imposed a 20% foreign equity limit on ownership of OTT platforms with over 100,000 subscribers.
