Success made in Europe!
What's a successful European film? How many are there?
Could there be more?
The conference will ask what makes a successful European film, and how we could make more. European films currently achieve a respectable share of 26% of cinema admissions. The % of US films is lower in Europe than in most non-European and non-US countries. However, the % of European films is stagnating. Indeed the structure of admissions to European films has changed, with fewer European blockbusters and a majority of mid-range films accounting for the majority of admissions. The number of admissions of European films outside Europe has fallen sharply, perhaps linked to the current lack of European blockbusters. And so national admissions are even more important. This market configuration of course creates very different realities and opportunities for films originating in large and small markets.
