Press

We serve European and international journalists with our press releases. We regularly publish facts, figures and analysis from our latest publications or conference presentations in the form of press releases targeting the journalist community.

All press releases are available in English, French and German. We also offer free copies of our publications to bona fide journalists who quote our work in their articles or write about our publications.

Our experts and analysts are often solicited to answer journalists' questions and participate in radio and television programmes. We are very glad to do this inasmuch as the work involved in producing our publications allows.

If you wish to join our unique network of journalists covering the audiovisual industries, or simply wish to receive our press releases for information, send an email to the Observatory's Press Officer (see details on the right). We look forward to satisfying your information needs.

Given the rise of subscription and transactional VOD services in Europe, the European Audiovisual Observatory, part of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg has just updated its report on Film and TV content in VOD catalogues.

This new report was authored by Christian Grece and Marta Jiménez Pumares, TV and VOD Analysts within the Observatory’s Department for Market Information. The film catalogue data comes from JustWatch, Filmtoro, Chili, La Pantalla Digital and EUROVOD; the TV content data was supplied by JustWatch.

This report was supported by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Commission.

A few key findings from this new free report:

  • There are more single film titles available on VOD than single TV seasons of series

In all, there are 7 times more single film titles on TVOD than single TV seasons (62 717 unique film titles versus 8 766 unique TV seasons) and 4.75 times more single film titles than TV seasons on SVOD (58 805 unique film titles versus 12 358 unique TV seasons)

Methodology

The film data in this report is based on May 2021 catalogue data from JustWatch, Filmtoro, La Pantalla and EUROVOD taken from 138 TVOD catalogues and 420 SVOD catalogues in 26 EU countries.

The TV content data is based on JustWatch data from 307 SVOD catalogues in 19 EU countries and on 49 TVOD catalogues from 13 EU countries collected in May 2021.

The second report, The visibility of audiovisual works on TVOD - 2021 Edition, authored by Gilles Fontaine, addresses the visibility of European works on Transactional VOD services’ home pages.

  • Visibility : there is no significant gap between the share of European works in catalogues and their share of promotion

The analysis of the home page of a sample of 54 TVOD services in 9 European countries shows that European works account for 32% of the promotion spots, including 18% for EU27 works. In all countries tracked with the exception of the United Kingdom and France, the majority of European works promotion spots goes to non-national titles.

However, the promotion of European films is highly concentrated: the top 10 most promoted European films account for 69% of all promotion spots dedicated to European films.
