EU box office revenues dropped in 2018 as EU market share increased
For the first time in four years, cumulative GBO in the EU Member States did not pass the EUR 7 billion benchmark in 2018. Not adjusted for inflation, this represents the lowest result since 2014; however, it remains the fourth highest level in the last decade.

Cinema attendance in the EU drops in 2018
On the occasion of the 69th Berlin International Film Festival the Observatory releases its first estimates for European cinema attendance in 2018. After three years of above average levels, the Observatory estimates that total admissions in the EU decreased by 3.0% to 955 million tickets sold.

Independent producers’ coordinator takes over European Audiovisual Observatory’s Advisory Committee Chair
The Advisory Committee of the Observatory has a new Chair. Elena Lai, Secretary General of the European Coordination of Independent TV Producers (CEPI), takes over from Johannes Studinger, Deputy Director of UNI-EUROPA, who held the position from 2015 – 2018.
Italy takes over the Presidency of the European Audiovisual Observatory for 2019
The Strasbourg-based Observatory, has been providing facts and figures on the film, television and video industries in Europe since 1992. Each January a different Observatory member country takes over the yearly rotating Presidency. In 2018 the Presidency was held by France.
